The Ancient Parish of St. Budeaux
Although historically predominantly a farming parish, St Budeaux lay on an important route between Devon and Cornwall, where the river was crossed by a ferry between Saltash Passage and Saltash, where the River Tamar narrows. Up until the 19th century a small part of the Devon bank around Saltash Passage was actually, administratively, part of the parish of St Stephens near Saltash, and was known as the Cornish Patch. In the 19th century, the marshy bay near Ernesettle was reclaimed as farmland, and little now remains of Weston Mill Lake, a creek to the south of the parish. Today the ferry no longer operates with the river crossing provided by a road bridge which parallels Brunel's historic railway bridge.
